What about inclement weather?
Our trains run in all weather. However, if due to severe weather conditions we need to cancel, we will notify you immediately.
What is the cancellation policy if I am unable to keep my reservation?
There are no refunds. We will try to accommodate a reschedule with a 10-day advance notice. The rescheduled trip needs to be in the same calendar year.
When do I need to arrive?
Passengers should arrive 15 to 20 minutes before their trip. Trains will be ready for boarding at that time. Unfortunately, due to schedule constraints, we cannot hold trains for late passengers.
Can I bring a pet or comfort animal on the train?
We do not allow pets or comfort animals on the train unless it is a seeing eye or service dog/minature horse.
Are there bathroom facilities on the train?
We have limited bathrooms facilities on the train. We ask that you try to use the facilities provided at Portsmouth Junction Station or at the Newport Visitors Center across the street from Newport Station before boarding. We are working to provide more bathroom facilities at our station areas in the near future.
Where do I park?
Public parking is located at both of our stations. See the directions page for details. You may drop-off and pick up in our lot in Newport. At the Newport Station we ask you keep the limited spaces near the canopy open for handicapped or elderly or people who need assistance.
Can I smoke on the train?
No smoking is allowed on the train or in the station area.
Can I bring food or alcohol on the train?
No, we have both food and drink available for purchase on all of our trains. Certain trains (Ice Cream Train, holiday Santa trains) do not sell alcohol, as they are family-friendly environments.
How do I make reservations?
For the Ice Cream Train you can purchase tickets at Portsmouth Junction Station, The Newport Visitors Center, or Bowens Wharf in downtown Newport. Tickets are also available on our website if you prefer to purchase ahead of time.
The Grand Bellevue Rail Dining Experience and Murder on the Rails are reservation only. Tickets may be purchased online or reserved by calling our office at 401-295-1203.
Groups looking to make reservations for any of our trains are asked to call the office so we may block off the appropriate number of seats.
Are you handicap accessible?
Unfortunately, we are not. Due to the narrow vestibules and door openings on our historic passenger cars we are not able to accommodate wheelchairs. Passengers must also use stairs to board the train.
Where do I board the train?
For the 2017 season all of our trains board at Portsmouth Junction Station, One Alexander Road in Portsmouth. We will be returning to Newport in 2018. See our Directions page for complete details.
