A Trip Through Time
The Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad offers the entire family the chance to enjoy a classic railroad travel and dining experience on vintage “streamlined” era passenger cars. Step back in time and experience the way society’s elite used to travel to Newport to summer at the famous mansions, yacht clubs, and beaches. See how the railroad helped to build Newport into one of the premiere tourist destinations that it is today. Our route takes you on a journey up the west side of Aquidneck Island, often only feet from Narragansett Bay. The Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad is not just a train ride; it is also a dining experience. We have our own chef and fully outfitted kitchen car, where food is prepared daily. Our menu includes dinner and lunch options. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan dishes are available upon request. Beers, wines, and spirits are also featured on select trains.
We offer a variety of rail and dining experiences departing both from our station in the Melville Marina section of Portsmouth and from our station at the north end of the Visitor Center in downtown Newport. Guests wishing to relive the golden days of rail travel can board The Grand Bellevue Rail Dining Experience, our flagship train, offering a two-hour, multiple course, formal dinner with live music. Our popular Murder on the Rails transports you back in time to prohibition-era Newport, where will be called upon to help solve a mystery while you dine. Parents looking for a family friendly attraction will love The Ice Cream Train – a short 45-minute ride that is perfect air conditioned break from sightseeing or the beach.
Our Portsmouth station location is also the departure point for Rail Explorers, an exciting new way to enjoy the scenery and history of Aquidneck Island using custom-designed, pedal powered rail bikes. Our schedules have been timed so visitors can enjoy rides both north and south along the line using the rail bikes and the train.
